Monday, July 19, 2010
MONCTON – The 13th International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Junior Championships begin today in Moncton, NB. These championships will be the largest sporting event in Atlantic Canada’s history with over 160 countries gathering at the newly built Stade de Moncton.
Canada will be represented in every event with a contingent of 60 athletes representing their country on home soil. In line with Athletics Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, the emphasis for this team is on enhancing the process of skill and athlete development with the goal to exceed Canada’s best ever performances at the World Junior Championships (3 medals in 1992, 7 top 8 performances in 1994, personal bests and to place all four relays in the final).
Jones named flag bearer
Leading the Canadian contingent into the stadium on opening night will be Caleb Jones from Saint John, NB. A sold out crowd and over 1,000 performers are expected to take part in the official opening ceremonies of the 2010 World Junior Championships.
