Zelinka records seasonal best, places 3rd in Commonwealth tune up

OTTAWA – Jessica Zelinka from Calgary, AB placed 3rd this weekend in the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge in Talence, France behind 2010 European champion Tatyana Chernova of Russia (6453pts) and 2008 Olympic Games gold medalist Natalia Dobrynska of the Ukraine (6309pts).
Zelinka’s score of 6204 points in the seven event heptathlon is a seasonal best; it is her 5th best all time performance and her top score since returning from a one year layoff to have a baby. She established a new personal best in the javelin with a throw of 44.24 metres. “Jessica showed her competitiveness through the two-day competition in what was a very strong field,” said her coach Les Gramantik. Gramantik added, “We will now shift the focus and get ready for the Commonwealth Games which are in 3-weeks.”

Cassidy wins Tyne Tunnel International Road Race
In England on Friday Josh Cassidy of Guelph, ON captured yet another international road race title at the Tyne Tunnel 2k. Cassidy beat a strong field including double 2008 Paralympic Games gold medalist David Weir (4:13.3) in a personal best time of 4:04.3. Third went to Ernst van Dyk of South Africa in 4 minutes and 23 seconds.
“The event had the toughest competition in years so it was great to come out on top” comments Josh following his victory. “I was pleased to have a clear win while also setting a personal best.”
Yesterday Cassidy took on a similar field at the UK Great North Run half marathon where he placed second just 6 seconds behind Weir who won in just under 45 minutes (44:49.1).
