Canadian Championships & World Trials come to a close; amazing performances all around

Saturday, June 25, 2011

Calgary, Alta. - As the Canadian Championships came to a close, Day four brought on some amazing performances. Highlighting today was the men’s shot put where Kamloops, B.C.’s Dylan Armstrong (Kamloops) shattered his Canadian record and re-established the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) 2011 World leading throw of 22.21 metres. Earlier this season Armstrong set a Canadian record of 21.72 metres; today all four of his measured throws bettered that mark.

In the women’s 100m hurdles Pickering, Ont,’s Perdita Felicien (Over the Top) won her tenth Canadian Championship in 12.80 seconds. Phylicia George (Project Athletics) of Markham, Ont. finished with the silver in 12.89 seconds. After a long wait in the starting area, it appeared Nikkita Holder (Elite Edge) of Pickering, Ont. would be disqualified from the championships for a false start. Nikkita was allowed to race under a protest and was later reinstated with the bronze medal.

Securing the ultimate feat, the sprint double, Crystal Emmanuel (Flying Angels) of Scarborough, Ont. won the 200-metres today in 22.99 seconds. Yesterday she secured the 100-metre championship and is the first to capture both titles since Erica Witter in 2003.

Two other Canadian records were bettered today; in the men’s F33 classification shot put, Robert Hughes (Sarnia Athletics) of Sarnia, Ont. improved his own mark by 1-centimetre to take the Canadian record to 8.99 metres. In the junior men’s 10km race walk, Kitimat, B.C.’s Benjamin Thorne improved upon Evan Dunfee’s Canadian junior race walk record clocking in at 41:34; Dunfee’s old record was set in 2009 at 41:55.
