Legion Canadian Youth Championship come to a close; amazing performances all around

OTTAWA – A number of athletes left their mark on the track and in the field this weekend as the 2011 Legion Canadian Youth Championship wound down in Ottawa, Ont.
Heading into the championships, World Youth teammates Brandon McBride of Windsor, Ont., and Tyler Smith of Wetaskiwin, Alta. were set to face off in the U18 800-meters. Capturing his first National title and re claiming the Canadian Youth record was Mc Bride who took the race in 1:48.41. In the U18 400-meters McBride would stop the clock at 46.83, in time to secure his second Canadian Youth record and gold medal of the championships.
Georgia Ellenwood of Langley B.C established a new Canadian Youth record in the seven event heptathlon with a score of 5043 points. Georgia captured her first National title surpassing the 2005 mark of 4928 held by Saskatoon, Sask.’s Brianne Theisen. In the U18 girls 200-meters, Christian Brennan of Waterdown, Ont., bettered her own Canadian Youth record stopping the clock at 23.43. Brennan set her original record of 23.47 last month when she claimed silver at the World Youth Championships in Lille, France.
Two other Canadian Youth records were bettered this weekend; in the boys 4x100 meters relay, Team Ontario of McBride, Wesley Best of Toronto, Andre Wright of Pickering, and Nienkel Paljola of Kitchener took gold with a time of 41.94, while the girls from Alberta, Ellie Hirst and Jenna Westaway of Calgary, Alexa Hrycun of Edmonton and Sage Watson of Medicine Hat stopped the clock at 3:45.32.
