National Coach Mentoring Program Launch

Tuesday, November 01, 2011

EDMONTON- Athletics Canada and The Canadian Athletics Coaching Centre (CACC) are pleased to announce the launch of an exciting and innovative National Coach Mentoring Program. This program aims to assist six coaches to progress their learning and effectiveness in the throws, particularly the shot put and hammer throw. Coaches from across Canada will be selected through an application process to participate in this four‐month program beginning January 6, 2012 and running through April 2012. Coaches should be expected to commit 3‐4 hours a week of study and participation to this program. The deadline to apply is Friday November 18, 2011.

Selected candidates will join world‐class throws coach Don Babbitt for a kick‐off weekend workshop in Edmonton January 6‐8, 2012. Participants will then interact via online with a number of selected resource pieces from experts such as Dan Pfaff, Dr. Anatoliy Bondarchuck/Dylan Armstrong, Kari Ihalainen/Tero Pitkimaki and others. Following these elements, coaches will engage with Athletics Canada National Team coach Larry Steinke around planning and technical analysis. Additionally, coaches will participate in moderated discussions on ways to solve current coaching challenges they face. A practical component with University of Arizona throws coach Craig Carter in Tucson March 31‐April 3 will conclude the program. The program is marked by a commitment to critical thinking, evaluation and review.

Costs for the program will be largely subsidized by Athletics Canada and the CACC including flights, accommodation and meals. However, each coach will be expected to contribute $750 towards the running of this program. If accepted into the program full participation is expected.

This program is targeted at coaches who are fully certified in the Old NCCP at Level 3 or those who have completed the Athletics Canada Competition Development workshop. Questions regarding this program should be directed to Wes Moerman at the CACC wes.moerman@ualberta.ca
