OTTAWA
– The prestigious Diamond League
series continues today in Italy with the Rome Golden Gala. The Golden Gala
features a trio of Canadian entries with Priscilla Lopes-Schliep of Whitby,
Ont., competing in the 100-metre hurdles, Hilary Stellingwerff of Sarnia, Ont.,
in the 1500-metres, and the men’s 4x100-metres relay team all set to take the
stage.
Stellingwerff has one objective in
sight, that is running below the 1500-metres Olympic A standard of 4:06.00. Leading
the Diamond Race in the 1500-metres with 4 points is Dibaba Genzebe of
Ethiopia, Aregawi Abeba also of Ethiopia is second with 2 points, and Lakhouad
Ibtissam of Morocco is third with 1 point. Hilary takes to the track at 20:56
local time (2:56 pm eastern time).
Priscilla Lopes-Schliep is looking
to earn valuable points in the diamond race after finishing sixth at the
Diamond League in Doha, Qatar a few weeks ago.
The race in Doha was only her third after taking a year off for the
birth of her daughter. Leading the diamond race in the women's sprint hurdles
is Brigitte Foster-Hylton of Jamaica with 4 points, Kellie Wells of the United
States is in second with 2 points and rounding out the top three is Phylicia
George of Markham, Ont., with 1 point. The 100-metre hurdles are set for 21:51
local time (3:51 pm ET).
Led by relay coach Glenroy
Gilbert, four athletes from the relay pool of Jared Connaughton of New Haven,
P.E.I., Sam Effah of Calgary, Alta., Dontae Richards-Kwok of Mississauga, Ont.,
Gavin Smellie of Etobicoke, Ont., and Justyn Warner of Markham, Ont., will team
up for the 4x100-metres relay at 22:23 local time (4:23 pm ET). The men are
looking to improve on their result of 38.77 seconds (ranked 13th in the world)
at last week's Golden Spike in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
