Stilwell stumps competition again in Taiwan; Reid Races to Bronze at IWAS World Championships

Saturday, September 15, 2007

Another gold medal performance caps off a successful competition for Nanoose Bay’s Michelle Stilwell at the IWAS World Championships. Stilwell gapped the field early in the T52 400 metres final and won handily with a 1:16.56 performance. Japan’s Tomomi Yamaki took sliver and Pia Schmid of Switzerland was the bronze medal finisher.

Brent Lakatos won the bronze in the T53 100 metres finals which saw a new world record set by gold medal winner Pichet Krungget of Thailand. Lakatos crossed the line in 15.32. Lakatos is ranked forth in the T53 400 metres (51.91) after today’s heats.

Stefanie Reid ran the race of her life in the T44 100 metres for below the knee amputees at the IWAS World Championships in Taipei, Taiwan today. With a strong start, Reid was the first athlete out of the blocks only to be passed by World Record holder and gold medalist April Holmes of the United-Sates (14.04) and Germany’s Katrin Green (14.33). Reid’s time was 14.54, only one one hundreth of a second ahead of New Zealand’s Kate Horan, last years fourth place finisher at the International Paralympic Committee’s World Championships. “We have worked hard on starts all year and it came together for me today. I now know that a sprint medal is a real potential for Beijing. This race was a great confidence builder for me.” There is little rest for Reid as she will compete in the 200 metres final tomorrow.

Fellow Windsor Bulldog Jessica Matassa raced in the T54 400 metre heats today and is ranked third as she advanced to Monday’s final with a time of 59.06. Tomorrow brings the 200 metres final in which Matassa is also ranked third.
