Women’s 4x400m win Silver; Drouin wins bronze at Commonwealth Youth Games

OTTAWA – The women’s 4x400-metres relay team captured silver today at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.  The team of Lauren Leon of Mississauga, ON, Karlene Hurrel from Brampton, ON, Jessica Parry from London, ON and Alyssa Johnson of Winnipeg, MB finished in 3:45.46 edging out Australia who was third in 3:46.10.  Gold went to India with a time of 3:42.02.

Derek Drouin of Corunna, ON won bronze in the men’s high jump with a leap of 2.09-metres.  Drouin completed his first attempt at 1.90-metres, made 1.95-metres on his third attempt, then hit 2.00-metres and 2.03-metres on his first tries.  He made 2.06-metres on his second try and cleared 2.09-metres on his first attempt.  Gold went to Willem Voigt of RSA who was the only competitor to clear 2.11-metres; silver was won by Nikhil Chittarasu of India.  

Jessica Parry just missed the podium in the women’s 800-metres, she was edged out by Sharp Lynsey of Scotland who finished 3rd in 2:06.77.  Parry was finished 4th in a time of 2:07.23.

Today marked the conclusion of track and field at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, with the Canadian team capturing seven medals over three days of competition.  The Games officially conclude on Saturday October 18.                 

Other Canadians in action today

  • Geneviève Lalonde of Moncton, NB finished 5th in the women’s 3000-metres in a time of 9:42.99.
  • The men’s 4x400-metres relay team placed 7th in the final.  Phillip Hayle of Brampton, ON, Segun Makinde of Ottawa, ON, Trent Sayers of Whitby, ON and Andre Hamilton from Toronto, ON combined to cross the line in 3:22.24.  Gold went to India in a time of 3:13.22.
  • Nyjal Majock of Calgary, AB finished 9th in the men’s 5000-metres final in a time of 14:56.23.
  • Trent Sayers failed to advance out of the men’s 800-metre rounds.  Sayers placed 4th in heat #3 with a time of 1:55.38.
