OTTAWA - Athletics Canada announced today the team that will compete at the Americas Race Walking Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador May 1st and 2nd. This year the roster will include a full Senior Mens Team along with solo performances in the Senior Womens and Junior Mens events.
Canada will present its most youthful race walk team ever; "What this team lacks in age and experience they more than make up for in heart and enthusiasm says Gerald Dragomir, Team Leader and Head Coach. They know who they are and they know that they can achieve great things. They have high standards and the capacity to attain their goals. This experience will be one small step along the path leading them to the world stage. It's a privilege to be able to participate in that process."
Among the roaster is Junior Race Walker Evan Dunfee of Vancouver, BC. Evan had a spectacular 2008 season racing to a personal record at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He also was the recipient of Athletics Canadas Fred Begley Memorial Trophy awarded to the top athlete in off-track events. This year Evan is setting his targets high as he will try and capture one of the oldest junior records in the 10km race walk set by Guillaume LeBlanc in 1981; In 1992 Guillaume won a silver medal in the 20km race walk at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain.
