OTTAWA Athletics Canada announced today that the 2009 10km Road Race Championships will take place as part of the Oasis Zoo Run held October 17 at the Toronto Zoo in Toronto, ON. The event will also serve as the stage for the grand finale of the 2009 Timex National Road Race Series which comprises of over 110 races with in excess of 140,000 participants every year.
Athletics Canada is very happy to have our 10km national championships take place during the Oasis Zoo Run organized by Canada Running Series. We also have the pleasure of partnering with them for the Canadian Half Marathon Championships and for this summers World Cup Marathon project in Berlin, commented Martin Goulet, Athletics Canada Chief High Performance Officer. Goulet added, I am confident they will deliver a first class event to our athletes and spectators alike.
Were just delighted, said Alan Brookes, Race Director for Canada Running Series. This is an outstanding opportunity to grow our sport -- to bring together the Federation, Canadas two premier running Series, and two marvelous sponsors in Oasis Juices [Lassonde] and Timex Canada. Together, we can build a bigger, better, higher profile, more exciting event that makes everyone -- and especially the sport -- a winner.
A number of star athletes took part in last years event held in Ottawa including race winner Simon Bairu of Regina, SK, Eric Gillis from Guelph, ON, Gitah Macharia of Oakville, ON and Taylor Milne from Guelph, ON. Gillis and Milne were members of last summers Olympic Games team with Macharia set to take part in the upcoming World Championships beginning August 15 in Berlin, Germany.
