10km Championships in Toronto to serve as qualifier for 2009 Chiba Ekiden; Dunkerley on start line

OTTAWA – The 2009 10km Canadian Championships taking
place in conjunction with the Oasis Zoo Run tomorrow in Toronto will also serve
as a national team qualifier for the 2009 Chiba Ekiden team which will travel
to compete in Japan in late November.
The men’s and women’s Canadian champions tomorrow in Toronto
will automatically earn a berth on the team with other top three finishers
selectable to the team with times of sub 29 minutes and 30 seconds for the men;
and on the women’s side 34 minutes or less.
The International Chiba Ekiden is a prestigious Invitational
road relay held annually since 1988 in Chiba, Japan, attracting very strong
teams from around the globe. The Ekiden covers the full 42.195km
marathon distance with the following legs: 5k men; 5k women; 10k men; 5k women;
10k men; 7.195k women. The race only became a mixed gender event in 2007.
National Endurance Coach, Thelma Wright comments; “The mixed
gender relay concept provides international competition in a team environment
and allows athletes to compete with some of the best in the world.”
4 men and 4 women (to include alternates) will represent
Canada at the 2009 event to be held on Monday November 23, 2009.

Dunkerley on start line
Visually impaired runner Jason Dunkerley of Ottawa, ON and
guide runner Greg Dailey of Toronto, ON will take part in the 10km Canadian
Championships on Saturday. The pair captured the bronze medal at last year’s
Paralympic Games in the 1500 metres.
