Athletics Canada names 2010 NACAC Cross Country Team

OTTAWA – Athletics Canada announced today the cross country team that will travel to Trinidad and Tobago to compete in the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships. As well as looking to capture NACAC titles on March 6th, these athletes will also be attempting to qualify for the 2010 IAAF World Cross Country Championships staged later in March.

Returning to the junior women’s team is Moncton, NB’s Geneviève Lalonde.  Lalonde is also a hopeful for the Canadian Track and Field team which will compete on home soil in Moncton at the IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships in July.  She swept last year’s NACAC Championships capturing both the individual and team gold medals. The junior men’s team is led by Mohammed Ahmed of St. Catharines, ON who helped capture the 2009 team silver medal and took home the individual bronze; Ahmed is also a team Canada hopeful for the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships.

In order to be selected for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships held March 28, 2010 in Bydgoszcz, Poland, teams must finish in the top 2 at the NACAC Championships. Individual winners at NACAC are also eligible for Worlds if their respective squad does not place top 2.
