Felicien silver, Lopes-Schliep bronze & Armstrong 4th at World Indoors

DOHA – The final today of the 60 metre hurdles at the World Indoor Championships featured 2 Canadians and both girls delivered big time in Doha.  Perdita Felicien in lane 3 and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep in lane 5 started and finished the race side by side capturing silver and bronze respectively.  Felicien from Pickering, ON crossed in a seasonal best time of 7.86 seconds for silver, just barely ahead of Lopes-Schliep who crossed in 7.87 to capture bronze.  Lolo Jones of the United States took home the gold in 7.72 seconds.

 

Felicien and Lopes-Schliep advanced to the final by winning their respective semi-final heats held earlier on Saturday.  Lopes-Schliep won semi-final 1 by crossing the line in 7.91 seconds while Felicien won the second semi-final in a seasonal best time of 7.94 seconds.

 

Armstrong 4th in Shot Put

 

The shot put final was one for the ages with 5 competitors throwing over 21.00 metres, Canadian Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, BC finished 4th with a mark of 21.39 metres.  Armstrong came ready to compete in the final by recording his first  ever indoor throws over 21.00 metres and set a new Canadian record twice.  His first throw of 21.12 metres was an impressive improvement over his previous indoor best of 20.84; he wasn’t finished yet as his fourth throw smashed the record which was only minutes old by launching the shot to 21.39 metres.  Armstrong also placed 4th at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.  Christian Cantwell of the United States took first (21.83m), Andrei Mikhenich of Belarus was second (21.68m) and Ralf Bartels of Germany rounded out the top three with 21.44 metres.

 

Other Canadians in action

 

Tabia Charles of Pickering, ON jumped 6.32 metres in the women’s long jump qualification placing 15th, Charles did not qualify for Sunday’s final.

 

Competition at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships concludes tomorrow with Canadian Kelsie Hendry from Saskatoon, SK lining up in the women’s pole vault final.
